Imelda turns northeast, heads out to sea; rain lingers today

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Temperatures are mild again to start with overcast skies and light showers. Rain will be pretty consistent today, especially east of Interstate 95, but the rest of the viewing area will see more breaks in the rain during the afternoon.

Imelda has continued to strengthen and is now a hurricane as of 8 a.m. Tuesday. Today’s clouds and rain are associated with Hurricane Imelda. The great news is that overnight, Imelda made the anticipated turn to the northeast and will begin its track out to sea. Imelda has winds of 75 mph and is moving northeast at 7 mph.

Hurricane watches are in effect for Bermuda as the island is directly in the path of Imelda. Peak intensity is now forecast at 100 mph, making it a Category 2 hurricane.

Imelda will still cause rough, elevated surf in the days to come along the Grand Strand. High surf and small craft advisories remain in effect for today and will last through Thursday. The rip current risk is also high, and surf zone waves will reach 4 to 7 feet today and tomorrow. It will remain breezy with winds out of the northeast and gusting between 20 and 25 mph. An isolated gust over 30 mph is possible.

Rain will end this evening, and the clouds will break up slightly. Temperatures will be cooler tonight, falling into the low and mid-60s. We will see the return of blue skies and sunshine for tomorrow, and temperatures will be in the mid-70s at the coast to near 80 inland. Tomorrow will also see a decrease in the humidity.

Mostly sunny and pleasant weather will top headlines for the rest of the week, with temperatures ranging from 76 to 80 degrees, and it will stay dry…
