Woman Tied to Deputy’s Ambush Dies in Rest Home

The mother of the man charged with shooting and killing a Darlington County, S.C. deputy died Sunday in a Tabor City nursing home.

Linda Dennett, 77, told deputies that her son Cameron was not at home when Darlington deputies – including Cerro Gordo native Devin Mason – attempted to serve a warrant on him July 1. Dennett then opened fire on the deputies as Mason opened a bathroom door, investigators said. Cpl. Jacob Heatherly and Mason returned fire, striking Cameron Dennett. Mason died from his injuries.
