South Carolina forestry officials remind residents about ongoing controlled burn in Horry County

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A plume of thick black smoke visible across parts of the Myrtle Beach area on Thursday was the result of a 150-acre prescribed burn in the Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve, state forestry officials said.

In a Facebook post, the South Forestry Commission, which is conducting the burn along with the state Department of Natural Resources, said asked residents to “please be mindful of smoke in the area.”

Horry County police said the prescribed burn will continue on Friday and that residents in the Carolina Forest area and along Highway 90 may continue to see smoke in the area. International Drive remains open as conditions allow…
