New Historic Marker Honors Green Sea’s Colonial Roots in Horry County

On November 12, 2025, the Horry County Historic Preservation Commission unveiled a new historic marker in the Green Sea community. The marker is located at the intersection of Green Sea Road and Mitchell Sea Road.

The event recognizes the area’s colonial history, which began in 1784 when William Norton received a 200-acre land grant. By 1787, Norton owned 2,000 acres, and the area was called ‘Norton’s Crossroads.’

The community developed around a meeting house and mill. Over time, the area had several names, including ‘Blanton’s Crossroads’ in the 1850s, before becoming known as ‘Green Sea.’…
