MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — World War II veteran Staff Sgt. Raymond “Ray” Morgan celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by friends and family on the Grand Strand.
Born Nov. 20, 1925, in De Pere, Wisconsin and growing up in Kenosha, Morgan represents the spirit of the “Greatest Generation.” At just 17, he volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a B-17 tail-gunner on 13 missions and a radar operator on 13 more missions over Italy and Germany.
After returning home, Morgan married Dorothy Lorraine Piehl, whom he enjoyed a 71-year marriage with before her passing in 2017.
“Congratulations to Ray. We are pleased to know his family is recognizing one of the rare remaining veterans of World War II, who happens to be a resident of the Myrtle Beach area,” mayor-elect Mark Kruea said. “The nation and the world owe a great debt of gratitude for Ray’s service and like-minded soldiers for the cause of democracy during World War II.”…
