DNA company aids Horry Co. in solving cold cases

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — The company Othram said they’ve worked with Horry County on multiple identification cases, from suspects to John and Jane Does.

Most recently, they helped identify the mystery John Doe in 2016, when police were called for a drowning victim at Ocean Creek plantation’s pool.

In 2023, the Horry County Coroner’s Office reached out to Othram for assistance.

“Because a SNIP DNA profile, had been built, but had not yielded leads that successfully identified this John Doe. In this particular case, the DNA profile was brought to Othram and we did the forensic genetic genealogy that ultimately led to the development of new leads and the identification of Mr. Hawkins,” said Colby Lasyone, chief of staff at Othram…
