‘Handle with Care’: New system helps Horry County teachers support students after traumatic events

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A program that gives Horry County Schools advance notice when students experience or witness trauma at home has processed about 60 cases since launching in October 2024.

The Handle with Care program allows Horry County Fire Rescue to notify the school district when crews respond to incidents involving or affecting students, such as domestic violence, drug raids, or accidents.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health initiative aims to help educators provide additional support during difficult times.

How the program works
