Environmental group, resident warn Horry County leaders of long-term impacts from planned landfill expansion

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Conway-based environmental group and city resident on Tuesday pleaded with Horry County leaders to delay action on planned landfill expansion that would erase more than 100 acres of wetlands.

“Approving a project that eliminates more than 100 acres of this natural protection runs counter to every resilience strategy, hazard mitigation plan and climate adaptation recommendation in the region,” Waccamaw River Keeper Preston Kelly said at a council meeting. “One the wetlands are filled, they’re gone forever.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last month issued a public notice after receiving an Horry County Solid Waste Authority application to build three new landfill sites at its Highway 90 location, which would boost capacity by 23.4 million tons over the next 45 years…
