North Myrtle Beach polar plunge draws big crowd

The weather was cold, the water was frigid but the feelings were warm Friday, Jan. 16 for The Surf’s Mid-Winter Polar Plunge.

Participants braved air temperatures hovering in the mid-40s and a water temperature of 53 degrees to raise money for the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach.

“It was great,” said DJ Heavy, an on-air personality for Surf 94.9, who was a participant. “We raised a lot of money for the Humane Society. We had a good time. It’s all about supporting the community.”

The event coincided with the annual Society of Stranders (SOS) Mid-Winter Break, which brings thousands of shaggers to North Myrtle Beach…
