Weather provides chilly reminder of need for long-sought facility

A crowd of stakeholders, representatives and supporters showed up to Brookgreen Gardens on a chilly January morning in long winter coats and woolly hats to be the first ones to step inside the Purdy Welcome Center.

The idea for a multipurpose conservatory was first raised in 1992 and was part of Brookgreen’s master plan since the early 1980s, according to Page Kiniry, CEO of Brookgreen Gardens.

The grand opening of the Purdy Welcome Center and Conservatory Gardens was the last in a series of projects to conclude after two years of construction. The historic capital campaign raised $25.8 million in total, and the welcome center is estimated at $18 million…
