After iconic Myrtle Beach ride paralyzed man, amusement park is suing insurance

In the summer of 2021, a guest at Family Kingdom Amusement Park in Myrtle Beach climbed aboard the iconic wooden Swamp Fox roller coaster. He says the ride left him completely paralyzed.

The rider and his spouse sued the amusement park for damages in 2024, claiming he disembarked from the Swamp Fox with an acute spinal cord injury resulting in quadriplegia. Now, the amusement park is suing its insurance company for failing to cover the incident.

The rider’s lawsuit claims that the amusement park failed to examine the Swamp Fox to make sure it was operating correctly, and also to “correct the latent defects that rendered the roller coaster extremely dangerous, more so than a typical roller coaster.” While the lawsuit does not provide specifics on what was wrong with the roller coaster that caused the injury, it asserts that the ride was “extremely poorly maintained” and there was no warning of its dangers…
