Horry, Georgetown counties move to OPCON 2 ahead of winter storm

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Bracing for the possibility of more than a half-foot of snow in some areas, local governments have begun making plans to cope with the storm and lingering cold temperatures.

Horry County moved to OPCON 2 just after 1 p.m. Friday, joining Georgetown County, which was the first in the Grand Strand or Pee Dee to do so. The entire Grand Strand and Pee Dee are under a winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service.

OPCON 2 means the local government is operating in a heightened state of awareness with emergency plans starting to be put into place. It also means officials have begun discussions with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division.

South Carolina counties use a three-level alert status with emergency events with OPCON 3 referring to normal operations and OPCON 1 meaning a disaster is imminent or occurring.

“Residents should expect wind-blown snow, hazardous driving conditions and wind chills in the single digits,” Georgetown County officials said. “Sporadic snow is likely to begin late in the morning on Saturday, becoming heavier and more widespread throughout the day.”…
