‘Has to be jail time:’ Surfside Beach looks to toughen bird, waterfowl feeding law

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Surfside Beach’s well-known problems with controlling its Canada geese population may be nearing an end, as town leaders said Tuesday they’re ready to approve jail time for chronic feeders of the creatures.

“I think it has to be, because I feel that certain people will keep doing this over and over and over again, and I think we have to get a little strict in this town to make a difference,” councilwoman Shawn Fallon said Tuesday night. “We’ve had enough residents reach out to us that they are tired of waste in their yards.”

Under an ordinance that was discussed at a council meeting — though no action was taken on it — people caught feeding waterfowl, seagulls and other birds could be subject of fines up to $500. The proposal also bans people from disturbing nests, trapping and other activity.
