‘We are at capacity:’ Horry Co. Sheriff’s Office seeks $130 million for new jail tower

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — Horry County officials are seeking $130 million to build a new jail tower as the J. Reuben Long Detention Center faces overcrowding and growing needs for mental health and substance abuse care.

The director of the J. Reuben Long Detention Center and the design company Mosely, The Design Group, presented a needs assessment to Horry County Council on Wednesday during the council’s budget retreat.

“We are at capacity currently,” detention center Director Marcus Rhodes said. “And so being at capacity means it’s time to build.”…
