Shark weighing more than 1,600 pounds pings off coast of Carolinas

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A male shark weighing 1,653 pounds pinged off the coast of the Carolinas on Sunday.

A ping is a location signal transmitted by a tagged animal’s tracking device.

Contender, an adult white shark measuring 13 feet, 9 inches long, was first tagged offshore the Florida and Georgia border on Jan. 17, 2025, according to OCEARCH.

The organization said Contender was the largest OCEARCH-tagged male.

In the past 443 days, Contender has traveled 6,839 miles…
