Horry County leaders upend landfill expansion plan over wetlands impact

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Horry County leaders re-ignited their concerns over a massive landfill expansion plan that would disrupt 100 acres of wetlands — instead embracing an ambitious idea that would send tons of waste somewhere else.

“If we’re going to take the approach that we’re going to start filling in 100+ acres of wetlands with municipal waste and construction waste, we need to look at every single viable alternative available to us,” councilman Dennis DiSabato said during a Tuesday afternoon workshop.

From building a new transfer station to implementing countywide mandatory recycling, DiSabato said there’s a lot more work to be done before bulldozing sensitive lands…
