Will County State’s Attorney James W. Glasgow announces that a jury has found Donovan DeWayne Burbridge of Kankakee guilty of the offense of Attempt First Degree Murder, (a Class X felony), and Aggravated Battery (a Class 3 felony). The verdict follows a 3-day jury trial before Circuit Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak that started on June 8, 2026 and concluded on June 10, 2026.
On March 24, 2024, while at Joliet’s River Valley Juvenile Detention Center, Burbridge threw repeated rapid punches at the victim. Burbridge stomped on the victim’s head and kicked him repeatedly and violently. The crime has left Burbridge’s teenage victim in a nonverbal state, needing assistance with feeding and the inability to swallow.
“The abject brutality in this case was extreme, and the verdict reflects the jury’s determination that the evidence proved the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. No innocent person should be subjected to violence and certainly not the level of violence revealed during this trial.
