(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More than 30 communities in DuPage County will continue to get their drinking water from the city of Chicago, but that could change.
Jim Zay is the chairman of the DuPage Water Commission, which isn’t happy with Chicago for several reasons, he said.
Those reasons include rising costs for Chicago water, lower rates given to Joliet that were not extended to DuPage County, and concerns about the condition of the pumping station that delivers Chicago water to DuPage County.
The commission is considering getting Lake Michigan water from another source, Zay said.
He said one scenario involves a northern water line route from Glencoe, with involvement from a northwest suburban water commission.
The shift could take about 17 years, so that’s how long the DuPage Water Commission has extended its contract with Chicago.
He says the commission will also continue to seek a better deal from Chicago.
