Drought expands across the state

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Drought monitors shows that all of Central Illinois is “abnormally dry.” In fact — the entire state is seeing drought-like conditions as we speak.

It’s been a summer of extremes. It started dry, turned pretty wet and now we’ve been dry for about a month.

The increased drought conditions affect everyone in some way. The Illinois State Fire Marshall is asking people not to burn anything, and to be aware of where you throw cigarettes. However, this dryness impacts farmers the most.

“Be careful with what you’re lighting on fire, what you’re throwing out a window, and be very cognizant of what that could cause when it’s dry like this,” Champaign County Farm Bureau Manager Bailey Conrady said.

They are moving into harvesting season, which is a critical time of year. There is no perfect formula for harvest season, but one farm expert says a change of scenery would be nice. In fact, our WCIA weather team reports there has been one 100th inch of rain in Champaign County so far this month.
