Chicago Man Faces Charges Nearly a Year After Fatal Wrong-Way DUI Crash on DuSable Lake Shore Drive

Authorities charge man with reckless homicide, aggravated DUI following fatal October 2023 collision

CHICAGO — A Chicago man has been formally charged in connection with a fatal wrong-way crash that occurred nearly a year ago on DuSable Lake Shore Drive. The crash, which claimed the life of a 29-year-old man, took place last October near the I-55 exit ramp.

Leotis Carter, 54, has been charged with three felonies, including aggravated driving under the influence (DUI) and reckless homicide. According to the Chicago Police Department, Carter was allegedly driving under the influence when he entered the northbound lanes of DuSable Lake Shore Drive heading south. The collision occurred at 11:48 p.m. on the 2900 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Carter’s vehicle collided head-on with another car, resulting in fatal injuries to a passenger in the second vehicle. The 29-year-old victim, who sustained blunt force trauma, was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
