High fire danger due to gusty winds and dry conditions across Chicago and northern Illinois today.

Chicago — Issued by the National Weather Service at 6:11 AM CDT on October 6, 2024.

Gusty Winds and Elevated Fire Danger Across Northern Illinois

Residents in Chicago and the surrounding areas can expect gusty winds and dry conditions today, increasing the risk of fire hazards. A cold front passing through the region early this morning has set the stage for strong northwest winds, with gusts reaching 25 to 30 mph through the afternoon. Winds are expected to ease later in the evening, but fire concerns remain as relative humidity (RH) levels drop to 20-25%, especially along and south of I-80.

Though current conditions remain just below Red Flag Warning criteria, the National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement advising residents to avoid any outdoor burning today. The dry air and gusty winds could cause fires to spread rapidly, posing a danger to both people and property.
