‘All God’s children’: Christmas mass celebrated at Cook County Jail

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -The spirit of Christmas was felt even behind the walls of Cook County Jail, where inmates gathered for mass, led by Cardinal Blasé Cupich.

About 100 inmates participated in the liturgy. Cupich said that the day is a reminder of our “shared humanity.”

Mark McCombs is the Executive Director of Kolbe House, the jail and prison ministry for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

“[It’s a] reminder again that we’re all God’s children, we’re all created in his image with inherent self-worth, inherent dignity,” McCombs said.

Cupich said it’s important that reporters covered the Christmas Day church service so that the inmates know Chicago has not forgotten them.

“What’s important I think to keep in mind is that we all need to have constant contact with human frailty and limitations, otherwise we ignore it in our own lives,” Cupich added.
