Chicago parents of CPS students register their condemnation over firing of CEO Martinez, decry Chicago politics, Mayor’s “puppet school board” and the lack of parent involvement in any education related decisions
There has been a public outcry following the Chicago Board of Education unanimous vote to fire Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez which took place on December 20th. This action took place despite Martinez filing a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the vote from taking place.
Two Latino organizations, the Illinois Latino Agenda and the Latino Leadership Council, quickly put out statements that strongly condemned the school board for terminating Martinez.
Some Latino parents also are angry about the board’s actions.
L.R. who’s the mother of a current CPS middleschooler and a graduate of the school system said, “They just didn’t treat him [Martinez] right. He only had a year and in that time he made a difference. Scores are up, funding is up, and we [the Latino school population] haven’t ever had a CEO like us before. You might not think it matter so much but it does.”
