HINES (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A west suburban man who served his country and broke records has died.
The Hines Veterans Affairs Hospital has announced the death of Eugene Baltes. He was 110-years-old.
The River Grove resident was the oldest known living World War II American Veteran. He joined the Army in 1941.
Last October, Baltes was given a letter of appreciation from VA Secretary Denis McDonough at his 110th birthday party.
The Gerontology Research Group says Baltes was also the oldest living man in the United States. His parents both lived to be 99,and he had several siblings who lived into their 90s.
Following Baltes’ death, the oldest documented living man in the U.S. is a 109-year-Rhode Island man.
