(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Helping new arrivals feel right at home.
“It’s just so important to do something.”
Anne Quetua, a junior at Wheaton North High School, says her compassion for others stems from the story of her own family.
“I grew up with my Dad telling me a lot of stories about how he immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines and the challenges he had to go through with that,” she said.
At just 17 years of age, Quetua created a youth advisory board for the humanitarian group World Relief, one of the first of its kind. Since then, the group has hosted supply drives, fundraisers, tutoring events and more to help those from over 100 different countries.
“Helping young people to be open minded to people from other countries and being accepting of that, that’s why I think a youth organization is so important. People can have an open mind younger rather than being set in their belief of being against refugees and immigrants when they’re older.”
Quetua is hopeful that her work, no matter the size of the impact, inspires others to find their own ways to make a difference.
