Man Facing Weapons Charges Escapes From Courthouse

CHICAGO — Police are looking for a man who escaped the Cook County criminal courthouse immediately after a judge ordered him to be held in jail, officials said.

At 12:35 p.m. Monday, Richard Donta Cotton, 32, appeared at a court hearing at the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building, 2650 S. California Ave., because he is facing weapons charges, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. But after the judge ordered Cotton to be taken into custody, Cotton asked if he could give his personal items to a relative, officials said.

Cotton walked toward the relative — but then ran out of the courtroom and completely out of the courthouse, according to the Sheriff’s Office…
