Temperance Women Took a Stand—and Sledgehammers: Plano’s Fiery Fight Against Alcohol

PLANO, IL — Long before Prohibition became national law, Plano’s women were already taking the battle against alcohol into their own hands—sometimes literally, with clubs in hand and justice on their minds.

In one of the town’s most dramatic episodes, a group of local women stormed the basement of a downtown Plano bakery they suspected was operating as an illegal tavern.

“They went over there with their clubs, bats, whatever they had,” said Ann Sears of the Plano Historical Society. “They marched downstairs and pretty much tore up the equipment down there.”…
