The Kane County State’s Attorney’s office announced Monday that an Aurora man was sentenced to 125 years in prison on multiple charges stemming from a deadly robbery in December 2021. 41-year-old Michael E. James was found guilty in May on nine counts of first degree murder and additional charges for armed violence and residential burglary.
Prosecutors say that on December 18, 2021, James and a co-defendant, 34-year-old Yecenia Granados, created a plan to commit a robbery. The pair entered a building in the 400 block of Clark Street and ultimately entered the apartment of Edward Smith, Jr. During the attempted robbery, James shot and killed Smith.
James was sentenced to 75 years for first degree murder and must serve the full sentence. He also received sentences of 35 years for armed violence and 15 years for residential burglary, which will be served consecutively to the murder sentence.
