Mental health care—not prison—for man who set fire at Chicago FBI HQ

A Chicago man who set fire to an FBI guard station while a federal contractor was inside has been sentenced to 22 months of time served. James P. Lofton, 46, received the sentence Tuesday from U.S. District Judge Manish Shah. He has been in custody and undergoing mental health treatment since his arrest.

In October 2022, Lofton threatened to burn an FBI guard alive and made racially charged death threats, according to federal prosecutors.

“Bitch, I’m going to burn you, and everyone is going to die. You f*cking Mexicans are going to burn and die,” Lofton allegedly said before pacing around the area. FBI agents and officers from the Federal Protective Service, and CPD interviewed Lofton a short time later. He was taken to a hospital, but no charges were filed…
