Chicago’s First River Swim in 100 Years Is Happening

It will be like hopping in a time machine to witness an event that hasn’t happened in the Chicago River for more than 100 year. The river swim is back and it’s return is not just for nostalgia, but a great cause also.

Web Pro News is one of the outlets confirming what many have been hoping for. The Chicago River Swim is returning in September, an event that hasn’t officially happened since 1908.

When will the newly-revived Chicago River Swim happen?

A press release from PRN Newswire says that September 21, 2025 has been locked in as the date when swimmers will return to the Chicago River. They say the event will benefit “ALS research at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and youth swim safety education in underserved communities”.

How can you be a part of this epic and historic Chicago swimming event?

You can apply through the official Chicago Swim event website for either a 1-mile or a 2-mile swim, but there is a possible hitch to this potential event return. The Chicago River will have to be tested for safe water quality and the event organizers reserve the right to postpone or cancel the swim if it doesn’t meet up to the standards required. Still, even the possibility that this iconic swimming event will be returning to Chicago is worth being excited about. Let’s hope it happens…
