Today marks the 35th anniversary of the tragic tornado that hit the Plainfield area. On August 28th, 1990, the F5 tornado touched down in Crest Hill in the afternoon, all but destroying an entire apartment complex before rolling into Plainfield , where Plainfield High School was demolished. The tornado then proceeded into a section of Joliet.
The incident left 29 people dead and 350 people injured , with over 165 million dollars’ worth of damage.
The tornado struck without warning , with no sirens to announce its approach. This led to an overhaul and upgrade of the Chicago area tornado warning system and sped the installation of the most powerful radar system, a Doppler radar, to ever scan area skies…
