Warning of fines up to $1,000 for drivers using common but ‘dangerous’ shortcut to get around traffic

FEW moments behind the wheel are more frustrating than sitting in bumper-to-bumper highway traffic and seeing a wide open shoulder ripe for the taking.

While a tempting move to make, it’s a dangerous one which could cost drivers up to $1,000 as part of targeted efforts against unsafe driving habits.

A Chicago sheriff’s office has issued over 900 tickets for the illegal act since late June as part of enhanced expressway patrols intended to address “ongoing concerns about unsafe driving” according to a video posted to its official X account.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office is increasing efforts to combat unsafe driving in a major way, stepping up traditional patrols while also using helicopters to monitor local highways…
