Midwest Weather Alert: Lake-Effect Blizzard Dumps Up to 18″ of Snow Along I-94, I-80 Through Monday Morning

Chicago, IL – Dangerous lake-effect snow will lock onto the south and east sides of the metro tonight, with crippling rates, whiteouts, and localized 12–18 inches possible before easing around midday Monday. Travel could become impossible in the core bands near Lake Michigan with power-line and tree stress in gusts over 30 mph. According to the National Weather Service Chicago, a Winter Storm Warning runs 9 p.m. this evening to noon Monday for Northern/Central/Southern Cook and Eastern Will, with Kankakee under a separate warning midnight–noon Monday. Warnings also cover Lake and Porter Counties, IN (9 p.m.–6 p.m. Monday) and extend east into La Porte and St. Joseph IN and Berrien, MI under regional warnings today into Monday evening.

According to NWS Chicago, snowfall rates may exceed 3 inches per hour, with thundersnow and gusts topping 30 mph cutting visibility to near zero along and east of I-94/90, I-80, and I-57. The Monday morning commute is at high risk for major delays and spinouts, especially near the lakeshore and south suburbs. IDOT, CDOT, INDOT, and the Illinois Tollway report bridges and overpasses will ice first; plows may be quickly overwhelmed in the heaviest bursts…
