Aurora man found guilty in Kane County court for 2024 murder, faces 20 to 60 year sentence

An Aurora man was found guilty by a Kane County jury Thursday on charges of first degree murder and armed habitual crime, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

According to prosecutors, on January 13, 2024, 51-year-old Travares O. Mitchell was driving a vehicle with 46-year-old Serhonda Burnett in the passenger seat. Investigators determined that Mitchell crashed his vehicle into a tree near Prairie Street and Woodlawn Avenue in Aurora, exited the vehicle, and fired multiple shots at Burnett through the driver’s side window before fleeing the scene. Aurora police responded to the scene and transported Burnett to a local hospital, but she was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined her cause of death to be from the gunshot wounds.

Investigators used witness statements and surveillance footage to determine that Mitchell, who had been romantically involved with Burnett, was behind the wheel and fired the weapon. A warrant for his arrest was issued on February 21, and he was arrested in Orlando on March 6 before being transferred to the Kane County Jail…
