Illinois bill would require donated displays of ‘In God We Trust’ and founding documents in schools and government buildings

An Illinois state lawmaker has filed a bill that would create the National Symbols Act. If passed, it would establish the display of America’s most treasured documents.

Republican Rep. Jed  Davis, who represents the state’s 75th District, located southwest of Chicago and east of Joliet, including Yorkville, Millbrook and parts of Marseilles, filed Illinois House Bill 4244 on Wednesday. If the bill were signed into law by Gov. JB Pritzker, it would result in the U.S. motto, “In God We Trust,” the Bill of Rights, the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence being displayed in government buildings and schools.

“If a unit of local government or school district receives sufficient donations of materials or funds to do so, then it shall display (the phrasing and documents) in its primary administrative building,” the language of the bill reads. “The displays under Section 5 must use durable posters or framed copies and be located in a conspicuous, open, and public space.”…
