Oak Brook Cops Slam Brakes On 70 Mph Suburban Chase

Traffic along stretches of I‑88 and Route 83 turned into the backdrop for a high-speed police pursuit Sunday evening, ending on a shoulder with a Des Plaines man under arrest after officers traced a pickup to a tip about a residential burglary in Wheeling. Prosecutors say the driver blew red lights, veered into oncoming lanes and pushed close to 70 mph through neighborhood streets before finally pulling over and surrendering. He now faces aggravated fleeing charges and remains in custody ahead of a court date next month.

According to FOX 32 Chicago, prosecutors said the chase kicked off around 6:35 p.m. Sunday, when Oak Brook police received information connecting the pickup to a Wheeling residential burglary. A Chicago police helicopter unit picked up the truck as it headed west on Interstate 88, then south on Route 83. Officers tried to pull the driver over near Clarendon Hills Road, but prosecutors say he kept going, at times hitting roughly 70 mph in 30 mph zones, driving onto a median along 63rd Street and nearly colliding with northbound traffic before a second Oak Brook officer moved in for a stop and the driver finally gave up.

How Oak Brook officers stopped the truck

Because of the speeds and near misses, officers briefly shut off their emergency lights and sirens, focusing instead on keeping visual contact while coordinating with the helicopter and neighboring agencies. The Oak Brook Police Department has invested in pursuit‑mitigation tools, including GPS “tag” darts, and cross‑jurisdictional tactics that let officers dial back direct high-speed chasing while still tracking suspects, according to reporting by CBS Chicago and the Oak Brook Police Department’s website.

A judge granted prosecutors’ request to deny pretrial release, keeping Miller locked up while the case moves forward, prosecutors told FOX 32 Chicago. His next court appearance is set for June 1…
