MIAMI and NAPLES, Fla.—Eyewear designers Christian Roth and Eric Domège have reimagined the Florida state flag as part of United Flags of Fashion, an America250 initiative created by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Vogue in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the U.S., the designers announced. Roth and Domège were selected to represent Florida because of their long-standing connection to the state, where they divide their time between Miami and Naples, and are among several designers invited to reimagine the flags of all 50 states, five U.S. territories and Washington D.C. The collection of redesigned state flags was unveiled on July 27 at Rockefeller Center in New York City and will be flown until September 4, 2026, the announcement said.
For Florida, Roth and Domège said they sought to create a design inspired by the state’s unique balance of heritage, tropical vibrancy and forward momentum. The design aims to honor the past while reflecting the creativity, dynamism and optimism that define Florida today. “The Sunshine State is a place of transformation, vitality, where natural beauty, culture and global influence converge,” the designers said.
In Roth and Domège’s design, Florida’s traditional red saltire is reimagined as refined, fluid and aerodynamic bands with an Op Art sensibility, evoking rhythm, light and energy. A refreshed state seal balances modern graphic forms with watercolor elements to reflect Florida’s atmosphere, costal identity and evolving character while preserving the original inscription surrounding the seal. The Seminole woman traditionally featured on the flag now wears sunglasses.
Roth and Domège noted that Florida’s coastline and sunlight are reflected through the imagery of the sea, sky, horizon and movement within the design. The lifeguard tower symbolizes community and protection, while the Seminole woman represents the state’s Indigenous origins and welcoming nature…
