The ‘course’ of history in Naples, Marco Island

In January 2007, Jeff Lytle, perspective editor, with the help of club officials, wrote “The ‘course’ of history” about Naples’ oldest private golf club as it marked its 40th anniversary.

Doing the math, Country Club of Naples will be turning 60 in just a few short years.

“It was preceded by a circa 1920s, nine-hole layout south of Fifth Avenue South and east of Third Street; and the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club and Hole in the Wall in the 1950s,” Lytle wrote.

If you like golf and history – and let’s face it, who doesn’t – you won’t want to miss a new exhibit by the Marco Island Historical Society (MIHS): “Out of the Sand: The Origins of Golf on Marco Island.”

The exhibit is at the Marco Island Historical Museum through March 24.

“Out of the Sand” examines more than 50 years of Marco Island golf history through historical images and objects from the MIHS collections.

“Golf has been a significant part of Marco Island’s identity since the 1960s,” said Austin Bell, MIHS Curator of Collections. “From its beginnings with the first pitch-and-putt golf course on the beach, golf grew into a signature island activity recognized by golfing enthusiasts from throughout the country.”
