Authorities find teen who sped away from youth shelter in wheelchair

Nearly a week after state authorities launched a search for a missing teen after he sped away in his wheelchair from a youth shelter as Hurricane Helene approached, authorities said they found him safe Sunday.

Dylan Helms, 16, went missing Sept. 26 in the area of the 5800 block of Whitaker Road, in Naples.

According to an incident report from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, staff at the youth shelter lost sight of Helms, saying he was “too fast on the wheelchair.”

Sheriff’s deputies canvassed Santa Barbara Boulevard and Rattlesnake Hammock Road, but did not find Helms.

Authorities on Sept. 30 issued a Florida missing child alert for Helms.

The location where officials found Helms was not immediately disclosed.
