Marco Island city officials probe vandalism; damages estimated in the thousands

A string of vandalism incidents in Marco Island over recent months has led city officials to approve the increase of patrols in the area.

Casey Lucius, assistant city manager for Marco Island, told the Daily News that a series of vandalism acts at Veterans Community Park in November and December is estimated at $15,000.

More recently, city officials say, there was damage to public property at the Maple Avenue beach access point, and to public trash receptacles on Collier Boulevard.

The damage includes ripping sinks off public restroom walls; dismantling public drinking fountains; knocking down the shower facilities at the beach; and pushing over trash cans.

In a news release, city officials said Veterans Community Park was recently renovated to include new restroom facilities, playground equipment and a bandshell.

Marco Island Police ask that witnesses contact them at 239-389-5050 or call 911.
