AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Beach Volleyball team got two big Sun Conference wins Friday, beating both the St. Andrews Knights and the RV Truett McConnell Bears 4-1. Over the eight flights the Gyrenes won across the two matches, five of them were clean two-set sweeps.
The morning started with Ave Maria taking on the St. Andrews Knights. SAU won the first flight in three sets, but it was all Ave Maria after that. In the second position, Ryan Getz and Emily Child won 21-15, 21-17 for their second win as a pair of the season. The third flight saw Beatriz Rissi and Kate Lyons team up for the second time this season and win in three sets 21-14, 13-21, 15-8. The clinching point was in the fourth flight with Greta Heiney and Elle Malczewski winning 21-14, 21-8. Ave Maria added one more point in the fifth flight for good measure with Abbey Grose and DeAnna Barrett coming back after dropping the first set, winning 19-21, 21-19, 15-13. Ave Maria kept the same lineup for the first four flights in their second match of the day against RV Truett McConnell. The Gyrenes jumped on the Bears early winning the first two flights. In the top position, Ines Lopes and Adriana Bravo went to three sets for the second match in a row but this time it went their way as they won 21-18, 20-22, 15-12. In the second flight, Getz and Child got their second win of the day with a 21-16, 21-12 sweep. Ave Maria couldn’t clinch the match in the third flight, but did secure the win in the fourth getting their third point from Heiney and Malzcewski. The two won back-to-back sets again, winning 21-19, 23-21. In the fifth flight, Barrett teamed up with Tala Cassata for her first match of the season and won 21-17, 21-12.
With the two wins, the Gyrenes improve to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in Sun Conference play. In league play, the Gyrenes have won 16 of their 30 flights…
