Marco Island leadership

Marco Island’s 2024 audit exposed two material weaknesses, two significant deficiencies, and multiple restatements. Yet the city manager, Mike McNees, failed to inform the City Council for weeks after learning of these findings — clear neglect of his duties under the City Charter.

The Audit Advisory Committee, required to meet with the auditor three times annually, was never convened during this cycle. As a former councilor who worked directly with Mr. McNees, I know his character to be exemplary — but that does not excuse this performance. In corporate leadership, such a failure would never be tolerated.

This wasn’t his only lapse. For years, Mr. McNees failed to conduct mandatory employee reviews, violating both policy and his contract. Marco needs a leader who meets basic obligations of management and oversight…
