Surviving Hurricane Ian: ‘We accomplished a hell of a lot for a couple of old geezers’

Landon Doggett is a Hurricane Ian survivor. The historic strong Category 4 storm that slammed Southwest Florida on Sept. 28, 2022, ended lives and upended lives. Doggett, his wife, Lois, and their cat, Delilah, were among the “lucky ones” on Fort Myers Beach, confronting the wrath of Ian and living to tell about it.

In fact, only a little more than a week after Hurricane Ian’s catastrophic path of destruction, Doggett, who was 81 at the time, sat down and wrote a letter (email) to his family, putting on paper what he and Lois had been through − a harrowing and very human experience and one that continues to haunt them today.

“We were more fortunate than most, in that we did not lose our home in the storm,” Doggett said. “The things that we lost were our church (Chapel by the Sea), our friends (whose homes were destroyed), and the quiet laid-back town that we had known for 50 years.”
