‘Day of the Dead’ outdoor installation

The Center for the Arts is extending an invitation to the public to come and see the new outdoor installation of grass walls that honor “Día de (los) Muertos — Day of the Dead.”  The artwork was crafted by students from Marco Island Charter Middle School under the guidance of art teacher Gigi Garraty. The inaugural Day of the Dead exhibition by MICMS took place in 2019 at the Art Center. The Art Center initiated its annual Day of the Dead Grass Wall installation project in 2022 as part of its ¡Arte Viva! programming, which celebrates Hispanic Art and Culture in Collier County. This installation will be available for viewing until Nov. 14, located in the courtyard of the Arts Center. Art students from MICMS have dedicated time to studying the history, traditions, and unique artistic practices associated with Dia de los Muertos. This celebration merges the ancient Aztec tradition of honoring ancestors with All Souls’ Day, a holiday introduced to Mexico by Spanish colonizers in the early 1500s. At the Center for the Arts, 1010 Winterberry Drive, Marco Island.
