Hundreds of runners race at Naples Airport for charity

NAPLES, Fla. — Hundreds of runners took off at Naples Airport for the third annual Runway 5K, which this year included its first-ever 10K race.

Money raised from the races will be split between the nonprofit Gulf Coast Runners and the nonprofit Experimental Aircraft Association. The Gulf Coast Runners provide teen runners with college and trade school scholarships. The Experimental Aircraft Association offers scholarships to aspiring pilots, aircraft mechanics, and engineers. More than 500 runners took part in this year’s races.

“For years, people talked about being able to do a 5K or 10K race on an open runway, and we had it come to fruition a few years ago with the Naples Airport Authority,” added Mitch Norgart, president of Gulf Coast Runners. “People love this race. It’s a novelty to be able to run on a straight, mile-long runway, and I think we’ll keep going with this one.”…
