Escalating cost of golf

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the apparent betrayal of one of the Professional Golfers’ Association’s (PGA) guiding principles: “Growing the Game.” This commitment to expanding participation in golf at all levels, especially for youth and underrepresented groups, seems increasingly hollow in the face of the realities in Southwest Florida.

The golf courses in our region, once havens for enthusiasts of all backgrounds, have become enclaves for the wealthy. The escalating fees implemented by many golf course owners have effectively barred access for those who cannot afford to pay hefty memberships or green fees. As a result, the essence of community and inclusivity that golf is meant to embody is being eroded.

The PGA has spearheaded various initiatives aimed at making golf more accessible. However, these efforts are rendered meaningless when local courses prioritize profit over participation. Golf should be a game for everyone — young aspiring athletes, families, and individuals from all walks of life should feel welcome on the course…
