Smoke, frost advisory, and elevated fire danger expected to continue into Wednesday

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – A fire burning near Florida State Road 29 along Alligator Alley Tuesday prompted the closure of one eastbound lane on I-75 Tuesday just east of Naples, FL, as extreme drought conditions continue across the region.

Smoke from the fire was visible on Miami radar, with the plume beginning to lessen as of broadcast. A north wind kept smoke from drifting over the interstate. Crews appeared to have a handle on the fire, according to reporting from the scene.

Drought conditions at historically early levels

The drought index is rated extreme across the area, extending into parts of the Everglades. Fire index numbers were approaching 700 — levels that typically are not seen until April or May. Officials said multiple rainstorms producing a half inch to an inch or more would be needed to reduce drought conditions.

Burn bans remain in effect for most of the state. The fire index for Wednesday is rated high for the area, including near Alligator Alley. Low humidity and dry conditions are expected to persist through Friday.

Frost advisory in effect through 8 a.m. Wednesday
