For our latest installment of “What We Do” where we talk our journalists about their jobs and the stories they write, we catch up with breaking new reporter Tomas Rodriguez, who also covers news in local courtrooms for The News-Press and Naples Daily News.

Question:Why did you become a journalist? What sparked your love for reporting?

I was fortunate to grow up in a household where my family breathed journalism. My father has been a TV reporter since 1985 in Spain and my mother worked for the federal government overseas for over two decades, so I got to spend afternoons and occasionally evenings at their workplaces. For a long time I was passionate about one day working for the Department of State, but an episode of medical negligence that resulted in a traumatic brain injury shaped my career path. I felt there was a need to be the voice of those in need around me and holding the responsible parties accountable for their wrongdoing…
