New Tennessee laws taking effect July 1 | LIST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As we approach the halfway mark in the calendar, a number of new laws passed by the Tennessee General Assembly are set to take effect July 1.

This bill requires all sheriff’s offices in the state to partner with federal immigration authorities. The measure was seen as controversial, though more than 70 agencies across the state have already made agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as 287(g) agreements.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office does not have any such agreement with ICE and has not had one since 2012.

Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall said his department is exempt from the law because his deputies are not POST-certified.

Most law enforcement officials in Tennessee are POST-certified, meaning they’re compliant with Peace Officers Standards and Training. Metro Law Director Wally Dietz previously explained to News 2 that because Hall helps operate Metro’s jails but does not have policing authority, he does not require POST certification.
