Tennessee takes Meta to court over social media, teen harm

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A legal battle between Tennessee and Meta Platforms, Inc. officially began this week in Nashville. The state is accusing the tech company of ignoring its own research when it comes to the harmful effects of social media on teenagers.

“What’s so interesting about this case is what should they have reasonably known and now what do we do about it,” Erin Calipari, director of the Vanderbilt Center for Addiction Research, told News 2.

According to Calipari, she has been closely following the case between Meta and Tennessee. The initial complaint filed years ago accuses Meta of knowing about the harmful impact Instagram has on young people, including increased levels of mental health issues like anxiety and depression. The complaint also alleges that Meta did study what makes the platform more addictive and chose profit over mental health for young users…
